Jerry Jones has taken Ezekiel Elliott's side in every dispute the running back has had with the NFL. The owner's support has been unwavering.
Now, Elliott's dispute is with the Cowboys.
"No matter how together you are in your thoughts, there comes a time when your interests diverge and you've got to sit down there and reconcile it,'' Jones said. "That just happens.
"That's what we're into.''
What the Cowboys were into Friday was the eighth day of Elliott's holdout. There's no end in sight.
"I've done it a lot more than these players have,'' Jones said Thursday evening before he left camp to fly to Ohio for the Hall of Fame ceremonies. "I have a little more, I don't want to seem trite, I don't want to seem cavalier about it, but I have a little more patience with how things are going to get done.
"The necessity to have angst, when you have it, to make sure you really, at the end of the day, have this thing as complete, complete being as much talent that we have on this team under the same roof as we can. That's impossible to do but you've got to try hard to get it done. That's what we're doing.''
Jones has hit this point in several different ways since camp began. Any contract Elliott, Dak Prescott or Amari Cooper receive must be done in the context of keeping the good, young nucleus of this team together.
The trick is finding the financial point where both sides agree that's possible.
"We want to keep this opportunity in place for several years,'' Jones said. "You can't run around the block.
"You can't do it the easy way.''
