Scout high on Walker Lockett, who he says could be sleeper candidate for Mets' 2020 rotation - SNY.tv

Last week, an old friend now in scouting with an AL team called to ask me if there was any hype from the Mets about pitcherWalker Lockett, who I admittedly knew little about at the time he was acquired.

"He's always had the build, arm strength and makeup to be a stable, back-of-the-rotation innings eater," the scout said, all of which was news to me. "I liked him back in San Diego the first time I saw his sinker-slider combo and ¾ arm slot."

Lockett was drafted out of high school by the Padres in the fourth round in 2012.

Following six full seasons in the minor leagues, Lockett made his big league debut for San Diego roughly one year ago. He never appeared on a published top prospect list.

This past winter,Brodie Van Wagenenacquired Lockett and Sam Haggerty from the Indians for catcherKevin Plawecki, who had once been a promising prospect, but had since wound uip in a backup role. The Indians had acquired Lockett a few months earlier from the Padres.

By the way, Plawecki, 28, has performed for the Indians similar to how he performed for the Mets, serving as a backup to Cleveland's everyday catcher, 30-year-oldRoberto Perez.

In his first two starts for the Mets after being promoted on June 20, Lockett was roughed up for six runs at Wrigley Field and allowed four earned on two home runs to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Most recently, though, after not starting for the Mets in nearly a month, Lockett held the Giants to one run in five innings at Oracle Park.

Lockett stands 6' 5" at 230 pounds, which is few inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than the average big league pitcher.

"He's a big, solid kid, and similarly strong toTim Redding,orAdam Eatonif you remember him, those kind of guys. He stays in the strike zone; gets ground balls; he changes eye levels very well -- and at different speeds -- and he isn't afraid to bust it inside," the former scout, now area director explained. "He already has a nice change up, but he needs to get it looking more like his breaking ball and fastballs."

The initial scouting reports on Lockett in 2012 made a similar assessment, according to an NL East pitching instructor that had once worked in scouting for an NL West team.

He said Lockett still has a similarly long and loose delivery to when he first joined the Padres. He recalls being impressed by how the imposing, young pitcher used his size to his advantage by remaining upright with a slow and long follow through and strong, lumbering momentum toward home plate.

"Yes," he said when I asked if Lockett has the potential to be a sleeper candidate for Van Wagenen's rotation next season. "He'll have to compete for a spot, I'm sure. But, he is tunneling better and is showing enough control and tail and sink on his two seamer to stick here."

I see what the above talent evaluators see, though my hunch is Lockett will spend much of his time with the Mets bouncing between the rotation and bullpen.

He often reminds me ofRobert Gsellman, who similarly must keep his pitches consistent, heavy and in the bottom third of the strike zone. However, as we often saw fromBartolo Colonand frequently see from Gsellman, if Lockett is a hair off in his execution, his pitches get hit hard, especially when facing left-handed hitters.

His size and arm strength are encouraging, though. He has improved the past few seasons on repeating his delivery and making his pitches look more alike longer in flight. He's also more relaxed and seemingly better skilled at commanding each situation and inning than he did in San Diego.

Lockett should be on Van Wagenen's 25-man roster this and next season. He is already a useful spot starter, which is a role he can easily succeed at during his career. However, at 24 years old, he has plenty of time to make the needed slight improvements to his off-speed pitches. And if he does so, much like the above scouts said, he has the potential as soon as next year to be a full-season, reliable, No. 4 or No. 5 pitcher capable of consistently lasting beyond the sixth inning.

Lockett is almost certainly never going to win a Cy Young Award or garner league-wide attention for his ability. However, just as rare these days are guys that throw 200 innings and make 30 starts in consecutive seasons. If Lockett can quickly develop and simply be that pitcher, it would be a big win for Van Wagenen...

For several weeks, the Mets' trade deadline thinking was fairly clear and straightforward. They expected to moveZack Wheeler, along with possiblyJason VargasandTodd Frazier. They would listen onNoah Syndergaard, Edwin Diazand others, but dramatic moves remained unlikely.

Then, Thursday brought a flurry of reports that indicated the team had become more open to moving Syndergaard by July 31.

The wayJacob deGromis blowing away hitters again, more and more you can't help but wonder if he may have cost himself a real shot at winning back-to-back Cy Young Awards with those three straight starts in April when he gave up 14 runs, in large part because he was tipping pitches.

As much as deGrom hates excuse-making, and blames himself for throwing "too many pitches down the middle" during that mini-slump, I got him on Thursday to acknowledge, sort of, anyway, that something funny was going on in those starts.

Things continue to heat up on the Mets trade deadline rumor mill.

A source tells SNY Insider Andy Martinothat the Mets have sent top evaluatorOmar Minayato scout the Braves Double-A team in Jackson, Tenn. on Wednesday night.

Martino notes that the Braves have enough talent in their farm system to match up with the Mets on any potential deals forNoah Syndergaard,Zack Wheeler,orEdwin Diaz.

It didn't matter that the Mets took the field not even 14 hours after the completion of the previous night's game or that he only got "about three hours of sleep" --Todd Frazierwas ready to get to work.

The Mets third baseman has been struggling lately, hitting just .161 with only two home runs and three RBI over his last 15 games entering Thursday -- a stretch extending back before the All-Star Break -- but Frazier was determined to make a change, and his manager noticed.

"Usually, the reasons for success are reasons nobody knows,"Mickey Callawaysaid. "But, he got up really early this morning and was in the cage at 7 a.m. before anybody got here. He felt like he andChili [Davis]identified something after the game last night, and even though it was a noon game, he got out of bed and was hitting in the cage and watching video."

Don't look now, but the much-maligned Mets bullpen seems to be on the cusp of a breakthrough.

After having the most blown saves in the first half of the season (21) and heading into the All-Star Break with the third-worst bullpen ERA in the league (5.63), the Mets' bullpen since the break has been a different story.

The unit has the fifth-best ERA in the league since then, and hasn't had any blown saves. It's a change that managerMickey Callawaycredits to the team's refined focus on being aggressive.

The Mets are willing to move most players on their roster, particularly free-agents-to-be likeZack Wheeler,Jason VargasandTodd Frazier.

Of that group, the team is getting the least amount of action on Frazier, according to major league sources.

Frazier has fallen into an ill-timed slump, batting .167 in July. Although anything can change before the July 31 deadline, as of now he appears the most likely to stay put.

"I haven't really had much of a discussion with the front office as far as the future of me being a Met," Syndergaard said Wednesday after the Mets' 7-2 loss to San Diego. "But as of right now, I'm more than happy where I'm at right now and I look forward to continuing to put on this jersey."

Dom Smith reacts to defense woes
00:01:53

Dom Smith had a few defensive miscues vs. the Padres, but he and his manager are confident he'll rebound.

For most of the season, the Mets have gotten by defensively withDominic Smith, a natural first baseman, starting in left field. He had an adventurous night in the outfield in Wednesday's loss to San Diego, though.

With the Padres leading 2-1 in the third andManny Machadoon second, Hunter Renfroe singled to left. Smith was looking to come up throwing, but took his eye of the ball, which went underneath his glove and allowed Machado to score and Renfroe to coast into second.

Later in the inning,Franmil Reyesdoubled down the line to score Renfroe. Smith's throw back into the infield was well wide of its target and allowed Reyes to hustle to third, though he'd be stranded there to end the inning. It was Smith's second error or the inning.

Four takeaways from Wednesday's game

1) Syndergaard was not as sharp as he would have liked, walking five batters (one intentionally) over seven innings pitched, the most he's issued in a start this season. He did finish the outing strong, however, holding the Padres scoreless over his final four innings. In total, the right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits while striking out eight Padres hitters.

The Mets don't have to bejustsellers orjustbuyers at the trade deadline. They can be both...

Trading free agents-to-beTodd Frazier,Jason Vargas, and evenZack Wheelerwon't bring back much in the way of difference-making talent for next season -- not with the way GMs hold tight to their best prospects these days, especially in deals for rental players.

Chris Paddackhasn't made any friends among Mets fans this season.

The rivalry dates back to earlier this season, when Paddack voiced some displeasure about losing out on April's Rookie of the Month award toPete Alonso. The right-hander went 5-1 with a 1.91 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .126 batting average.

Still, Alonso took home the hardware for the first month of the season.

"Do you want to be Rookie of the Month or Rookie of the Year? We'll see who the top dog is," Paddack said before his first matchup with Alonso and the Mets. "I'm coming for him."

Mickey Callaway, Robinson Cano and Jason Vargas on Cano's monster 3 home run game in win over Padres

Robinson Canohas had an illustrious career in the big leagues.

He's been selected to the All-Star team eight times. He's won two Gold Gloves. He's finished top-five in MVP voting four times, and, of course, he won a World Series with the Yankees in 2009.

But in Tuesday night's win over the Padres, Cano did something he'd never done before, slamming three home runs en route to a 5-2 win.

Robinson Cano's power numbers dipped drastically during the season's first half, but he's certainly showed some power since the All-Star break.

Cano ripped his third home run of the night deep into the right field seats to put the Mets up 5-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning. For Cano, it was the first three-homer night of his pro career. It's the first three-homer night for any Met sinceYoenis Cespedesagainst the Phillies in 2017.

Amed Rosario
Amed Rosario

Danny Abriano, SNY.tv|Twitter|

When it comes to Mets shortstopAmed Rosario, two things can be true.

It can be true that Rosario hasn't yet put it all together during an at-times frustrating three seasons -- especially when you consider the expectations that were heaped on him when he was viewed as one of the best prospects in all of baseball.

It can also be true that at just 23 years old, Rosario has shown more than enough to potentially be part of the Mets' solution going into 2020 and beyond. Definitely not up there withPete Alonso,Jeff McNeil, orMichael Conforto, but in the conversation nonetheless.

Former Mets David Wright attends the 'No Kid Hungry' event. David talks about Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil being legitimate threats.

Mets legendDavid Wright, now working in the team's front office in an advisory role, spoke Tuesday about the team's "disappointing" season while also keeping an eye on the potentially bright future that includesPete AlonsoandJeff McNeil

"For me, it's obviously been -- up to this point -- a disappointing season," Wright said while representing the Mets at an event forNo Kid Hungry. "There have certainly been some bright spots, but overall, I think when you put together a roster the way Brodie and the front office has, there's I'm sure a lot of blame to go around. And Brodie is taking his fair share."

Noting that the team has dug a hole this season, Wright left open the possibility of a miracle run, but said "there's certainly a lot of room for improvement."

"Go back to where you came from."

The phrase has dominated the American consciousness for more than a week, following President Trump's suggestion in a Tweet that four Congresswomen of color "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."

Several days later, Trump presided at a campaign rally over a "send her back" chat directed at Somali-born U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn).

The Mets were hoping that Wheeler could return for their homestand against the Padres this week, and they have yet to announce their rotation for the three-game series that starts on Tuesday. SNY's Andy Martinoreported earlier that teams interested in Wheeler via trade were "nervous" about his health.

Mets react to disappointing loss
00:00:57

Michael Conforto summed up the Mets disappointment in losing the series. They lost 3-2 in the series finale in 12 innings to the Giants.

Mets first basemanPete Alonsowas back in the starting lineup on Sunday for the team, but it wasn't his most memorable performance to date in the 3-2 extra-innings loss to the San Francisco Giants.

One day removed from the slugger hitting a three-run homer as a pinch hitter, he took frustrations out on his bat. In the third inning, Alonso worked a 1-2 count against pitcherConner Menez. On the fifth pitch of the at-bat, Alonso chased a fast ball out of the zone for the final strike.

During the post-strikeout walk of shame back to the dugout, Alonso returned with two parts of a bat instead of one as he snapped it over his knee.
