BEREA, Ohio – While a lot of focus at Browns training camp has been on position battles,Myles Garrettwas in Berea on Monday to remind everyone that he’s a Pro Bowl defensive end for a reason.
Garrett was in the backfield and disrupting plays during 11-on-11 sessions. Garrett blew past left tackleGreg Robinsonbefore pulling up right behindBaker Mayfield, a sure sack if tackling quarterbacks was allowed in camp.
Garrett also caused problems in the run game, stoppingNick Chubbfor a loss in a live tackling session, and later cutting offJarvis Landryon an end-around.
Now entering his third season, Garrett has been loose at camp, often acknowledging fans who yell his name or running along the rope that separates fans from the field for a series of low-fives.
On Monday, he walked over to where punters were practicing, asked for a ball and let loose with a kick that proved he should remain a defensive end.
Here are some other observations from Monday:
1. Rookie linebackerSione Takitakihas rubbed some offensive players the wrong way in camp with his aggressive style during non-tackling sessions. On Monday, he showed off his pursuit abilities in tackling sessions, getting into the backfield for stops and generally being around the ball almost each snap.
And still rubbed some people the wrong way.
2. WithOlivier Vernongetting some time off from team reps,Chad ThomasandChris Smithsaw first-team reps opposite Garrett in full-team sessions. Smith got into the backfield againstChris Hubbardfor what would’ve been a sack had coaches let the play continue.
3.Lenzy Pipkins, who has been an outside corner on the second team throughout camp, had a nice pass break-up at the front pylon. Pipkins got his arm in to disrupt aDrew Stantonpass intended forIshmael Hyman.
4. CornerbackRobert Jackson, who spent last season on the practice squad, broke up passes to the corner of the end zone on back-to-back plays against the third-team offense.
5.Greedy Williamscouldn’t keep up withDamon Sheehy-Guiseppion a deep route in a 7-on-7 session, but Sheehy-Guiseppi dropped the pass.
